Frequently Asked Questions

Can siblings come too?

Siblings are only invited in exceptional circumstances. Experience shows us that the siblings very often benefit from being at home alone with their parents, allowing them to be in the spotlight, following a period where they were perhaps not given the amount of attention that they felt they needed.

How many children go to each camp?

Camp Quality Wellington Central Districts caters for approximately 70 children at our annual camp.

Can my child go to camp if he/she is very sick?

If a child is receiving active treatment they may not be able to attend.  We recommend that you speak with your child's oncology doctor about their medical status if you are unsure.  We are required to have qualified oncology and paediactric nurses as part of our nursing team and we also ensure that the nearest hospital is on-call during our stay in their region.  A week away from hospital may be just what the doctor ordered!

Who looks after my child on a camp?

Each child is paired with their own companion, who is directly responsible for their everyday needs while at camp.  Additionally, our regional manager, staff and nursing team are responsible for the whole camp, 24 hours a day.  To find out more about the criteria companions must meet click here.

Does it cost anything for my child to attend camp?

We understand that families have alot to deal with, without the extra burden of finding funds to send their child to camp.  Camp Quality is a charitable trust, and works very hard to raise all of the necessary funds so that there is no cost for children to attend.

Do volunteer companions pay for their own expenses whilst away, e.g. accommodation, travel etc?

No - whilst you are away, Camp Quality covers all your costs.

I applied to be a companion.  When will I find out if I've been selected for a camp?

After you have completed the Training Weekend you will be notified by the Regional Manager if you have been selected as a companion for camp.  You will then be given further details to attend an orientation before camp.

What happens at Orientation?

Orientation is a great chance to get to know the other companions (new and old) that have been selected to help at the upcoming camp.   You will also find out more about the roles of each staff member, be given more information about the facilities and programme, and find out which camper you have been paired with.

When do I get in touch with my camper?

Companions are given details of their assigned camper at Orientation, and are then expected to make contact with the camper and their family by phone, email or letter intially.  Hopefully you will be able to arrange a meeting before camp, but sometimes this is not possible.

Can I help out in other ways if I'm under 18?

Yes, as a charity we rely on generous donations to ensure we can continue to provide life-changing holidays for children. We welcome and support any kind of fundraising initiatives that you may have.
